A historic residence with a rich past, located in the heart of Berry, in one of the most beautiful villages in France, the Château de Gargilesse is an artistic and historical stopover from the 12th and 18th centuries.
Located in one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France", the castle of Gargilesse-Dampierre (Indre) is a medieval fortress whose origins date back to the 10th century.
Originally built to protect the borderlands of Lower Berry, the current building retains imposing 12th-century fortifications, notably its curtain walls and monumental gate flanked by two cylindrical towers. Partially destroyed during the Fronde in 1650, it was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Dampierre family, who added a more comfortable residence.
In the 19th century, the site became a major artistic center under the influence of George Sand, attracting many painters of the Crozant School. Today, this privately owned monument hosts contemporary art exhibitions and cultural events.
